We all have our Christmas traditions… Grandma’s humdinger of a trifle, the tattered angel on the top of the tree, those much-anticipated yearly catch-ups. Here at The Big Issue it means our annual Big Wish-You edition. It’s a bumper issue – with eight extra pages – to celebrate the people who sell it.
It’s our seasonal gift to you, an extended Streetsheet of sorts, festive messages and reflections by vendors from all around the country. There is a lot to gain from these messages: positivity and hope; the importance of family and community; a reminder that The Big Issue can be more than a job; that a smile and a laugh go a long way.
Drew from Sydney writes: “Of course the money is important, but a chat, a laugh and a connection with another human being on a regular basis is really therapeutic.” “Thanks for the chats and smiles,” adds Willy of Melbourne. Many vendors have celebrated success in 2016. Les, of Melbourne says: “The Big Issue has given me confidence and pride in myself.” For David B of Subiaco: “I finally managed to obtain long-term housing.” And Grant in Brisbane writes: “I’m proud to say I’m going to be reunited with my daughter and spend Christmas morning with her.” There’s even romance in the mix, with two of our vendors sharing their happy news!
Each year, since our first Christmas edition 20 years ago, it’s been our custom to star a vendor on the cover. This year it’s Robbo from Sydney, who kicks off the Big Wish-You’s on page 16. From all of us – wishing you a very Merry Christmas!
