The Big Issue Street Football Festival
The Big Issue Street Football Festival is an annual event held on a purpose-built floating football pitch in the heart of Darling Harbour, Sydney.
The festival is Australia's most significant community sporting event, which aims to celebrate diversity and showcase the power of football to unite the community and improve lives.
The fourth annual event will run from January 17-27, 2014, bringing together hundreds of participants from all walks of life.
The festival will feature the following competitions:
Junior Clubs (Jan 17-25): coinciding with school holidays, more than 700 junior players from 76 NSW clubs will take to the floating football pitch for the junior club competition.
Good Sports Challenge Cup (Jan 18-19): event partner the Australian Drug Foundation will host a competition for 16 sporting clubs involved with the foundation's Good Sports program.
Corporate Cup (Jan 20-24): 16 teams from some of Sydney's largest companies including Perpetual, NAB and Herbert Smith Freehills will swap their suits for football jerseys in a corporate tournament.
A-League/W-League Challenge Cup (Jan 22): A-League up-and-comers (U20s) and W-League players from clubs including Sydney FC, Western Sydney Wanderers, Central Coast Mariners and Melbourne Heart will put their skills on show. A-League youth will play from 3-5.15pm followed by W-League players from 5.30-7.45pm.
Government Agency Cup (Jan 24): six teams including police and fire fighters will go head-to-head in the Government Agency Cup.
NSW Freestyle Football Championships (Jan 25): there will be plenty of skill, tricks and entertainment at the NSW Freestyle Football Championships as competitors perform tricks during three-minute battle rounds. See more at www.trickstarfootball.com
Community Street Soccer Program National Championships (Jan 26-27): coinciding with the Australia Day long weekend, this event will bring together almost 50 homeless and disadvantaged men and women from our Community Street Soccer Program.
The floating football pitch
All the festival action takes place on our iconic floating football pitch, which is purpose-built for this special event each year.
The pitch is:
23m x 17m in size
Weights 23 tonnes (weight of around six elephants)
Constructed on a barge made up of 23 pontoons, which are bolted together and strengthened with underslung beams
Anchored at Darling Harbour with five two-tonne concrete blocks
Construction of the floating pitch takes two weeks

This was an exciting and fun tournament held in the highest spirit of fair play, respect and good sportsmanship. Our players will have fond memories of their experience. George Malouf, Manly Vale Football Club
