We’re excited to introduce the Australian team for the 2017 Homeless World Cup.
The seven players were selected from our Community Street Soccer Program. This year, the Homeless World Cup will be in Oslo, Norway, from 29 August to 5 September.
The team, known as the Street Socceroos, was formally announced with a jersey presentation by Minister for Health and Minister for Sport Greg Hunt in Canberra today.
The Big Issue has operated the Community Street Soccer Program with support from the Australian Government since 2007. Minister Hunt announced today that this funding support will continue for a further four years, committing $4 million to the national initiative.
The Big Issue CEO Steven Persson said the funding would allow The Big Issue’s Community Street Soccer Program to continue giving vulnerable men and women the opportunity to change their lives.
The Australian Homeless World Cup team was selected from hundreds of participants in the Community Street Soccer Program – a national grassroots initiative that uses soccer to help participants reconnect with their community and make positive changes in their lives.
