Frequently Asked Questions

How is The Big Issue Classroom different to other programs?

  • The Big Issue is an independent, not-for-profit organisation. Our social enterprise model means that guest speakers are paid and supported for sharing their stories with students. Our guest speaker stories explore how people can become homeless, and also pathways out of homelessness. Students are referred to organisations that can help if they can relate to the materials discussed in the workshops.

How long do the workshops go for?

  • All our sessions go for one hour.

What time do sessions begin?

  • It varies. Contact us directly to work out a time that suits you, subject to availability.

How many students can attend one session?

  • A maximum of 30 students attend a single session.

Who runs the workshop?

  • Each session is managed and run by a trained facilitator.

Is the content of the eClassroom different to a workshop delivered face-to-face in Melbourne or Sydney?

  • No - we cover the same material, but do different activities to allow for the different modes of delivery.

How do we get to your Classroom?

  • We recommend travelling by public transport. Our Melbourne Classroom is a short walk from Flinders Street Railway Station and the following trams stop right outside the door: 3, 5, 6, 11, 12, 16, 48, 64, 67, 72 and 109. Our Redfern Classroom is a short walk from Redfern Railway Station.

Can you come to my school?

  • If you are a primary school teacher in the Melbourne or Sydney metropolitan area wishing to book our workshop, Josh's Story: Making Good Choices, you are welcome to contact us about a visit to your school. We assess these requests on a case-by-case basis. We do charge an additional fee for travelling to schools.

Do you provide follow-up activities?

  • Yes. After the workshop we provide teachers with a link to our downloadable worksheets and lesson plan ideas.
