Cover Story: Vendor Week 2020

Since The Big Issue sprang into life in 1996, more than 7000 people have donned the trademark fluoro vest. By selling our magazine, they’ve improved their circumstances, and forged friendships and community along the way.

We’re not alone: The Big Issue is part of a global community of more than 110 street publications across 35 countries, all part of the International Network of Street Papers. And you are among 4.6 million readers worldwide helping to combat homelessness and disadvantage.

This is a special week that unites us – International Vendor Week. This edition is dedicated to those remarkable people. We feature an inspirational Letter to My Younger Self series penned by vendors around the country: Rachel in Sydney, David in Perth, Stephen in Melbourne and our cover star, Lenny, in Brisbane. Their letters offer hope, dignity and compassion.

Also in this edition:

• A second-generation firey on the frontline of the devastating NSW bushfires writes about the life of a volunteer firefighter, and the determination, courage and heart of her Blue Mountains community.

• In Big Picture we visit Currumbin Wildlife Hospital – Australia’s busiest wildlife hospital – and meet the animals affected by bushfires, drought and injury. As well as the dedicated people nursing them back to health.

• Want to do your bit for wildlife caught up in the bushfire crisis? We’ve included a sewing pattern for animal pouches, to help possums, joeys and koalas in their recovery.

• Singer-songwriter-actor and now author Clare Bowditch talks mental health, music and her new memoir.

• From Kanye West to Lou Reed, the Blind Boys of Alabama have collaborated far and wide to bring their gospel music to fans the world over since the 1930s – we speak to them ahead of their Australian tour.

MasterChef 2017 winner, Diana Chan, shares her recipe for mouth-watering Spicy Tamarind Fish in Tastes Like Home.
