The Big Issue Media Cup

Southern Cross Austereo took home The Big Issue Media Cup, beating reigning champions Carat at Fawkner Park, Melbourne last Friday afternoon.

The annual tournament, hosted by The Big Issue and Carat, brings together some of Australia’s prominent media and advertising organisations that support us throughout the year.

During the afternoon, players had a taste of our Community Street Soccer Program, which runs in 18 locations around Australia and helps people experiencing marginalisation and disadvantage to make connections in the community and keep healthy.

The name of the game in street soccer is fair play, which all the players embraced – but our media teams were still out to win.

Southern Cross Austereo and Carat dominated the preliminary rounds of the tournament, knocking out Nova, Channel Nine, SBS, S&J, MCN.

In the challenging grand final, Carat tried to hold onto their title but lost to Southern Cross Austereo four to two in the battle for the Cup.

Big Issue vendor Phil made a guest speech about how selling the magazine has helped him. He then went on score two goals in his street soccer debut. “It was the best day of my life,” Phil says.

Well done to all the teams who took part in The Media Cup and thank you for helping to raise awareness of Big Issue vendors working hard on street corners around the country in rain, hail and shine.
