Big Issue vendors enter the digital economy

We are excited to announce that from Friday Big Issue vendors will offer more ways to pay for The Big Issue magazine.

On 2 November, Big Issue customers will be able to buy the magazine from their local street vendors with two digital payment options, as well as cash:

  • Tap-and-go, with Quest devices provided and powered by NAB.
  • Mobile payment app, Beem It, which allows users to make and receive instant payments. It is jointly owned by Commonwealth Bank, NAB and Westpac.

Digital payments will help to ensure vendors, who earn a life-changing income from selling The Big Issue magazine, have the greatest chance of success now and in the future.

Rachel, who sells The Big Issue at Pyrmont in Sydney, said the new technology would help her reach new customers. 

“When you’re homeless you become so marginalised. The Big Issue means I’m part of the community, and digital payments is another step forward because everyone is using digital payments,” Rachel said.

“Digital payments will make the magazine more accessible to more people, and I’ll sell more magazines. The extra money will help me continue my university studies. And I’ll spend some on myself, which I’ve never done before.”

Big Issue street vendors run their own microbusiness and have the choice about whether they use one or both digital payment options. Some vendors will continue to take cash only.
