Newcastle new home to The Big Issue

The Big Issue launched in Newcastle today, giving a hand up to homeless, marginalised and disadvantaged people in the Hunter region.

Seven vendors have already signed up to sell the magazine, including Mark who spoke at the launch event.

“I’m selling The Big Issue for a change in my life and to make some money. But it’s not all about the money, I really enjoy it,” Mark said.

“I’ve had three days selling; so far it’s been excellent, people want to help you out and talk to you, it’s unreal.

“It’s a good job working for yourself; you get to knock on and knock off when you want to.”

Homelessness and unemployment in Newcastle are getting worse. According to the latest census figures, more than 1,000 people in Newcastle won’t have a safe or secure place to sleep tonight.

The Big Issue’s Newcastle expansion will give people who are doing it tough for all kinds of reasons, often beyond their own control, the chance to earn an income and connect with their community.

BHP generously provided seed funding to establish The Big Issue in Newcastle.

To mark the launch, NSW Energy Coal Asset President Elsabe Muller sold The Big Issue alongside vendor Mark at Wheeler Place.
