Street Socceroos Depart for 2019 Homeless World Cup

Yesterday evening the Street Socceroos embarked on an extraordinary journey, representing Australia in the 2019 Homeless World Cup in Cardiff, Wales.

The team is made up of eight players across Australia who have faced issues surrounding homelessness and disadvantage. They were selected though The Big Issue Community Street Soccer Program, a project that engages those facing tough times to become active and social in a safe environment.

The Big Issue CEO Steven Persson said: ‘I would like to wish our Street Socceroos the very best of luck at the 2019 Homeless World Cup. The Homeless World Cup is a wonderful platform which celebrates and inspires values of friendship and fair play to an audience around the world.’

‘The Street Socceroos are a true representation of these values, and we are all very proud of them and their achievements.’

The Homeless World Cup gives those such as the Street Socceroos a chance to play on an international level, while meeting new people and exploring beautiful surroundings. More than 64 teams from over 40 countries will take part in the tournament, being held from 27 July to 3 August 2019.
