Celebrating our 24th Birthday!

Today The Big Issue celebrates our 24th birthday! While we’re not out selling today, we’ve come a long way from starting on the steps of Flinders St. Station in Melbourne, becoming Australia’s most successful social enterprise.

Since launching in 1996 The Big Issue magazine has provided opportunities for people experiencing homelessness, marginalisation and disadvantage to earn an income and connect with the community. What began with just a few vendors in Melbourne has now grown to 800 vendors in VIC, NSW, ACT, SA and WA, who are all proudly working to improve their lives.

Vendors purchase the magazine for $4.50 and sell for $9, earning a meaningful income with every sale. Since beginning in 1996, 13 million magazines have been sold, putting more than $31 million into vendors’ pockets.

As well as providing an income, selling the magazine has helped vendors become an integral part of their local community, create friendships with regular customers and develop their confidence.

In our 24 years The Big Issue has expanded from a magazine to include our Women’s Subscription Enterprise, The Big Issue Classroom, The Big Idea, Community Street Soccer Program and Homes for Homes. Each of these programs addresses homelessness and disadvantage in Australia, and works to positively impact and empower participants.

We would like to thank everyone who has supported our publication and organisation throughout the years, especially during these difficult times. Your support is what makes The Big Issue so impactful. Make sure to pick up our latest edition online or through subscription!
