What A Man

German actor Matthias Schweighöfer (making his writing and directing debut) is Alex, a hapless nice-guy who is cruelly dumped by his model girlfriend Carolin (Mavie Hörbiger) for their supposedly more-manly neighbour, the sleazy Jens (Thomas Kretschmann). Via some superficial but comedic ruminations on what it means to be a ‘real’ man in the modern world, Alex must learn to accept himself for who he truly is and realise he’s actually in love with his old schoolfriend, Nele (Sibel Kekilli from Game of Thrones). What a Man topped the box office in Germany last year, and this DVD is part of 20th Century Fox’s new line of world cinema releases. Schweighöfer has created a shameless, formulaic rom-com, even down to the clichéd ‘mad scramble to the airport to declare undying love’ resolution. It’s also strangely enjoyable, due in no small part to the warmth and charisma of the two leads. The fact that it doesn’t take itself very seriously only adds to its charm.
