Cee-Lo's Magic Moment

Cee-Lo Green

Who could have predicted that Cee-Lo Green would ever record a cheesy Christmas album? That the man singing about degradation in Goodie Mob’s ‘Sesame Street’ (Soul Food, 1995) would one day record with The Muppets? But here he sings about love being the best Christmas present while they do ‘Mahna Mahna’ and Pepe the Prawn raps. It’s worth hearing once, which is more than can be said for ‘Baby, It’s Cold Outside’, with Christina Aguilera showily trilling. More worthwhile are an a cappella version of ‘You’re a Mean One, Mr Grinch’, which is both hysterical and weirdly menacing, and a moving take on Joni Mitchell’s ‘River’. Depending on your temperament, either is worth adding to your Christmas playlist. Unfortunately, most of the rest are bland takes on usual suspects. Hearing Green sing ‘White Christmas’ is odd, but hearing him duet with Rod Stewart on ‘Merry Christmas, Baby’ is deeply embarrassing.
